In the throes of the Great War, Cher Mi, a pigeon of remarkable bravery, became a beacon of hope. On October 4, 1918, the 77th Infantry Division was trapped in the Argonne Forest, their situation dire. Major Charles Whittlesey scribbled a desperate plea for help and attached it to Cher Mi's leg. With a gentle toss, the pigeon was launched into the war-torn sky.

As Cher Mi flew through the chaos, a bullet shattered his leg and pierced his chest. Despite the pain, he pressed on, navigating through smoke and fire, driven by an unyielding sense of duty. After a perilous 25-mile journey, he reached the headquarters, collapsing into the hands of waiting soldiers.

The message, stained with blood but intact, read: "We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heaven’s sake, stop it." The bombardment ceased, and reinforcements were sent, rescuing the trapped battalion. Cher Mi, despite his grievous wounds, survived and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre for his gallantry.
